ChiefsClash | AI & HR, JUL 2024

Updated: Jul 30

July episode of ChiefsClash turned to be somewhat different. Instead of having 3 top leaders, we decided to gather everyone to discuss and debate about a hot topic: Usage of AI during applicants' screening process.

  1. What is your opinion on the usage of AI in the applicants' screening process?

  • Levon: We don't welcome using Ai and the main message that I receive is why do you care how your candidates are solving the issue. Well we do because we care whether they are able to function without internet, Ai or any device assistance. Imagine you are to establish an Esports team and you get like 100 candidates and the best results are coming from the ones who have used the cheat code. And once you go to a tournament where the cheat codes are prohibiting, you lose. I think I explained my viewpoint properly.

  • Larrie: I actually think that AI served its purpose here in that you asked them not to use it and they immediately fail candidacy when they chose to break your rule. I do believe that generative AI is coming and the biggest problem that we see is that they don't know how to use it correctly and so it's these broad sweeping answers that come across where it doesn't really make sense. So in the hands of an experienced user one of the things you mentioned is that people go to school for three four or five years I have 11 years of schooling, I can get some pretty good answers out of chat GPT but it takes me a very long time.

  • Alex: I can really see both sides of this issue and I'm going to give you a bit of a politician's answer here. As a candidate looking for a new job you might be frustrated with the current set of the recruitment layout, you send many applications and you're not hearing back so I get it you turn to a tool which saves you time you want to get those applications out quickly. As a business I can see it too in that you want someone that's crafted something to you that's spent time in research and explained why they should be the candidate taken forth so I can really see it from both points.

  • Guy: First of all I think like others have said everyone uses AI, it's almost in everything you cannot deny it. What we need is people who know how to use it to get the best job done and in your case you have a very flexible job you need them to show that they have cognitive skills they can adapt to anything. What if there's no internet there's also what if there's no electricity, does everyone know how to type on a typing machine or whatever they call to write the thing so I think the questions have to be tailored so that so that you have to show how people would actually do the job using AI.

  • Sasha: It's been a very interesting journey for me. I'm obviously in industry and I decided to go back to education at the beginning of this year and a hot topic that is discussed a lot is the use of Chat GPT and AI when it comes to handing in research and postgrad level assignments. How they are obviously handling it is that GPT is amazing for research but you need to know and you need to put a lot of work. But students aren't doing that they are putting a general case question and they getting a generic answer back. The whole point of a post-grad studies is that you learning theoretical knowledge, but in this way it is becoming very hard to do so.

  • Frank: So we mentioned AI detection tools now I have a friend who writes affiliate content and he uses AI to write the basic thing and then he sends it for another tool that makes it sound like it is not AI anymore that's the level we're at now so you use Ai and then you use AI not to make it sound like AI so I think it's very hard to deal with this. The other thing is it's very hard to detect AI content because these AI detection tools are unreliable.

  • Milena: In our company we first do AI checks and then we do the manual check to see if it's indeed matching the predefined criteria that we set and it makes sense basically in terms of experience. When it comes to using AI tools to build your CV, why not? If it can do better jobs and you can use it and basically get all the jobs that you want, then of course. But the thing with AI at least when I tried myself, it was pretty generic and to get it to the point where it would be really considered good, it takes for me personally more time.

  • Shahar: By the way my answer if exactly what I'm telling to my daughters: it's not cheating if you're not being caught, so like go and use whatever you want.
